How to play Lale Devri: crossing, strands and orders

Play Tulip Era

Lale Devri is a genetics puzzle game inspired by the tulip craze of 18th-century Istanbul. You play a new apprentice in the palace garden: you cross tulips, plant bulbs, advance the seasons and grow orders from mansions, the bazaar and the palace. The game has five acts and 35 gardens, plus a new "Garden of the day" every day.

The tulip and its two strands

Every tulip carries two strands. The two rows of badges under a tulip show them. A strand carries up to four things: colour (red, white, yellow), leaf (round or pointed), height (short or tall) and pattern (plain or flamed). How a tulip looks comes from how its two strands meet.

Colours blend

If both strands are the same colour, the tulip is that colour. If they differ, a blend blooms:

StrandsTulip
red + whitepink
red + yelloworange
white + yellowcream

Dominant and hidden traits

Round leaves, short stems and the plain pattern are dominant. If even one strand has them, the tulip shows them. Pointed leaves, tall stems and the flamed pattern show only if both strands carry them; on a single strand they stay hidden and their badge looks faded. You bring hidden traits out by crossing.

Crossing and seasons

  1. Tap two tulips in the garden and press Cross.
  2. The table shows four possible seedlings: each takes one strand from the top tulip and one from the left tulip.
  3. Pick two of the four and plant them. The parent tulips are used up, and two bulbs go into the seed bed.
  4. Press Next season: the bulbs bloom. Each season has a limited number of crosses.

Orders and delivery

Each garden has one or more orders, delivered in sequence. A Deliver button appears under a tulip that fits the order. A delivered tulip leaves the garden, so you must keep the tulips that carry the strands later orders need. Deliver every order before the seasons run out to clear the garden; the fewer seasons you use, the more stars you earn.

The price decree and flamed tulips

In Act 4 a price decree appears: a tulip named in the decree may not be planted and shows as sealed in the table. When the short road closes, you must find another. Act 5 brings flamed tulips; flamed is recessive and never blooms unless both strands carry it. The flawless tulip of the treatise is red, pointed-leaved and flamed.

Helpers

  • The master speaks at every new rule and makes the thing to tap glow.
  • The question mark in a tulip's corner explains how each trait comes from its two strands and why it does or doesn't fit the next order.
  • Hint tells you the next step of the shortest path and why.
  • Undo takes back crosses and deliveries made this season.
  • The tulip treatise is an eight-page illustrated guide to the rules.

Common mistakes

  • Judging a tulip by its looks: a pink tulip hides a red strand; read the badges.
  • Delivering the only tulip that carries a strand you need for the next order.
  • Skipping the seedling that carries the needed strand; parents are used up, so the strand can be lost.
  • Advancing the season with an empty seed bed: a season is wasted.
  • Thinking one strand is enough for pointed, tall or flamed; they need both strands.

Frequently asked questions

How many gardens does Lale Devri have?

There are 35 gardens in five acts. After you finish Act 1, a new Garden of the day also opens every day.

Why can a pink tulip give a red seedling?

A pink tulip has one red strand and one white strand. When two pink tulips are crossed, a seedling can take both red strands and bloom red.

How are stars awarded?

Finish a garden in the shortest number of seasons for three stars, one season more for two stars, and more than that for one star.

What should I do if I get stuck?

The Hint button tells you the next step and why. You can fix a wrong cross with Undo, or restart the garden if needed.
