How to play the Turkish Licence Plate Quiz: a guide to learning province plate codes

The Turkish Licence Plate Quiz teaches the plate codes of Türkiye's 81 provinces on the map. In Türkiye the first two digits of a car number plate are the code of the province where the car is registered. The game has two directions: you find the province of a plate on the map, or you type the plate of the province highlighted on the map. Licence Plates is a mode of the Türkiye Map Quiz game: your records, card album and progress are shared with the main game.

This guide covers the two directions, tries, points, what happens after a wrong answer and easy ways to learn the plates.

Two directions: plate to province, province to plate

When you open the Licence Plates mode you see two buttons at the top:

  • Find the province from the plate: a badge that looks like a Turkish number plate appears in the question line (TR 38). Find that province on the map and tap it.
  • Type the province's plate: the map highlights a province and shows its name. Number keys open at the bottom and you enter the two-digit plate code.

The direction you choose is remembered, so next time you start with the same one. The two directions train different skills: the first teaches the map, the second the numbers. Playing both works best.

Choosing a round

After choosing the direction, choose the length of the round:

  • Full round: 81 provinces asks every plate in random order. This is the round whose score goes to the leaderboard; each direction has its own.
  • Quick round: 20 provinces picks 20 random provinces and takes a few minutes.
  • With the 7 buttons under Or choose a region you practise only the plates of that region's provinces.

For quick rounds and region rounds your best score is kept on your device only.

Number keys and typing

In the Type the province's plate direction, the bottom of the screen has the number keys 0-9 and the Delete and OK buttons. The digits you type appear on the plate badge above the keys (3_, for example). The answer goes in by itself after the second digit; if you type one digit and press OK, typing 3 counts as 03. On a computer the number keys, Enter and Backspace work too.

Plate codes run from 01 to 81; if you type a number outside that range the game reminds you, and it costs one of your tries.

Wrong answers teach too

In the plate quiz a wrong answer is never wasted:

  • In Find the province from the plate, if you tap the wrong province it flashes red and its name and plate are shown: "That is Nevşehir (50)".
  • In Type the province's plate, if you type a wrong plate you are told which province it belongs to ("34 is the plate of İstanbul") and that province flashes on the map.

You get 3 tries per question. After the third miss the right answer is shown ("Kayseri = 38"), the province stays gold and the next question comes. When you are right, the province's name, plate and region are shown together.

Points and records

When was it answered?Points
First try, within 3 seconds100 + 50
First try, between 3 and 10 seconds100 + a shrinking bonus
First try, after 10 seconds100
Second try50
Third try25
Not answered0

A full round is worth at most 12,150 points. The round never ends because time runs out; time only affects the speed bonus. The results screen shows your score, accuracy, time, the provinces you missed and newly unlocked culture cards. The first time you get a province right, its card unlocks and goes into the Card Album in the main menu.

Playing on a phone

In Find the province from the plate, tapping tiny provinces can be hard on a phone. When you tap a spot where several provinces are crowded together, a magnifier opens and you pick the province in the enlarged window. You can zoom the map with two fingers, move it by dragging, or turn your phone sideways to make it bigger. In Type the province's plate, if the highlighted province is off screen or very small, the map moves to it by itself.

Tips

  • Plates 01-67 are alphabetical: where the province's name falls in the alphabet, that is roughly where its plate is.
  • Mersin 33, Kahramanmaraş 46, Şanlıurfa 63: remember their old names İçel, Maraş and Urfa.
  • A plate above 68 belongs to one of the 14 provinces created later.
  • Use plates you know as anchors: 06 Ankara, 34 İstanbul, 35 İzmir, 67 Zonguldak.
  • Note the province named after a wrong plate too; it may come up in your next round.
  • Practise the plates of one region first, then move on to the full round.
  • Find the province from the plate also teaches you the map; play the two directions in turn.

The story of Turkish province plate codes

How do you remember Turkish plate codes?

Turkish plate codes follow a pattern: codes 01 to 67 follow the alphabetical order of the 67 provinces of that time. Adana is 01, Ankara 06, İstanbul 34 and Zonguldak 67. Codes 68 to 81 belong to provinces created later, in the order they were founded: from 68 Aksaray to 81 Düzce. If you know this pattern, you can guess a plate from where the province's name falls in the alphabet. Licence Plates is a mode of the Türkiye Map Quiz game; your records, card album and progress are shared with the main game.

Number of plate codes
81 (01-81)
01-67
Alphabetical order of the 67 provinces of that time
68-81
Provinces created later, in founding order
First plate
01 Adana
Last plate

Renamed provinces
03 Afyonkarahisar, 33 Mersin, 46 Kahramanmaraş, 63 Şanlıurfa

Alphabetical order

In Türkiye the first two digits of a car number plate show the province where the car is registered. When these codes were assigned the country had 67 provinces, and the numbers were given out in their alphabetical order: Adana 01, Adıyaman 02, Afyon 03, Ağrı 04 and so on up to Zonguldak 67. In the Turkish alphabet the letter I comes before İ, which is why Isparta is 32 and İstanbul is 34.

New names, same plates

After the plates were assigned, some provinces were renamed, but their numbers did not change. Maraş became Kahramanmaraş in 1973, Urfa became Şanlıurfa in 1984, İçel became Mersin in 2002 and Afyon became Afyonkarahisar in 2005. That is why today 46 Kahramanmaraş sits among the provinces starting with M, 63 Şanlıurfa next to those starting with U, and 33 Mersin among those starting with İ. The order of the plates still carries the old names of these provinces.

New provinces, new numbers

The 14 provinces created in 1989 and after were not slotted into the alphabet; each new province took the next free number. In 1989 Aksaray became 68, Bayburt 69, Karaman 70 and Kırıkkale 71; in 1990 Batman 72 and Şırnak 73; in 1991 Bartın 74; in 1992 Ardahan 75 and Iğdır 76; in 1995 Yalova 77, Karabük 78 and Kilis 79; in 1996 Osmaniye 80; and in 1999 Düzce 81. This way the numbers of the older provinces never changed.

In the game

In the game a plate is shown as a badge with a blue strip, like a Turkish number plate (TR 38). Whichever mode you play, when you find a province correctly its name, plate and region are shown together, so you pick up the plates even while playing Provinces or Regions. Every province's culture card shows its plate too. Province names are written with their official Turkish names in every language.
