Regions of Türkiye Quiz rules and tips

How to play the Regions of Türkiye Quiz: a guide to learning the regions on the map

The Regions of Türkiye Quiz asks which of the 7 geographical regions of Türkiye the highlighted province belongs to. Each right answer paints the province in its region colour, and by the end of the round the whole country has turned into a coloured region map. Regions is a mode of the Türkiye Map Quiz game: your card album and records are shared with the main game.

This guide covers choosing a round, answering, scoring, the end-of-round report and quick ways to learn the regions.

The goal

The goal is to put each of the 81 provinces in the right region. The question shows the province name and highlights it on the map; the map zooms in, so you also see the provinces around it. Below are 7 region buttons: Marmara, Aegean, Mediterranean, Central Anatolia, Black Sea, Eastern Anatolia and Southeastern Anatolia. Each button shows the colour of its region, and these colours build up on the map during the round.

Full round and quick round

When the game opens you get two choices. Full round: 81 provinces asks every province in random order; at the end the whole map is painted and your score goes to the leaderboard. Quick round: 20 provinces asks 20 random provinces; it suits a short break or a quick review, and its score is kept only as your best on this device.

In both rounds time only affects the score: the round never ends because time runs out, so you can also play without hurrying.

Answering and wrong answers

Tap the button of the right region or press a key from 1 to 7 (1 Marmara, 2 Aegean, 3 Mediterranean, 4 Central Anatolia, 5 Black Sea, 6 Eastern Anatolia, 7 Southeastern Anatolia). On a right answer the button turns turquoise, the province is painted in its region colour and the next question comes straight away.

On a wrong answer the button turns red and a note appears, such as "Kayseri is not in Eastern Anatolia"; you then choose again for the same province. You have 3 tries per province. After the third miss the correct region is shown, the province is still painted in its colour and it is added to the list at the end of the round.

Score and leaderboard

  • Right on the first try: 100 points, plus up to 50 for a quick answer
  • Right on the second try: 50 points
  • Right on the third try: 25 points
  • Three misses: no points, the correct region is shown

The top score for a full round is 81 × 150 = 12,150. At the end you see your score together with accuracy (the share of provinces you got on the first try), time and the number of mistakes. Only full-round scores go to the Regions leaderboard.

End of the round: the coloured map

Once the last question is answered, the map becomes a report card: all 81 provinces are painted in the colours of the 7 regions and the province names appear. On a computer hover over a province, on a phone press and hold, to see its name. The results screen lists Ones you missed and the New cards you opened this round. View the map closes the results window and leaves the coloured map on screen, so you can study the region borders at your own pace.

Using the map

The map zooms to the highlighted province for every question. You can zoom in and out with two fingers or the mouse wheel and drag to move around; the corner buttons and the +, - and 0 keys do the same (0 fits the whole map). Turning your phone sideways makes the map bigger. In Regions mode you answer with buttons, so you never need to tap a small province.

Tips

  • Start with a quick round to get a rough idea of where each region lies.
  • Think of a province together with its neighbours: provinces next to each other are usually in the same region.
  • Don't trust the coast: İstanbul, Kocaeli, Sakarya and Kırklareli lie on the Black Sea but are in the Marmara Region.
  • Inland provinces can be in the sea-named regions: Kütahya is in the Aegean, Isparta in the Mediterranean, Tokat in the Black Sea Region.
  • Watch the line between East and Southeast: Malatya and Elazığ are in Eastern Anatolia, Adıyaman and Diyarbakır in Southeastern Anatolia.
  • Find the provinces from the Ones you missed list on the coloured map and look out for them next round.
  • Answering with the 1-7 keys makes the speed bonus easier to get.

The geographical regions of Türkiye

How to learn the regions of Türkiye

The 7 geographical regions of Türkiye were defined at the First Geography Congress, held in Ankara in 1941. Four are named after the sea on their coast (Marmara, Aegean, Mediterranean, Black Sea) and three after their position in Anatolia (Central, Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia). The Black Sea Region has the most provinces (18); the largest region by area is Eastern Anatolia and the smallest is Southeastern Anatolia. The quickest way to learn the regions is to see each province on the map together with its neighbours: the game highlights every province, paints it in its region colour when you answer, and turns the whole of Türkiye into a region map by the end of the round.

The First Geography Congress

The 7 regions of Türkiye taught in schools today were defined at the First Geography Congress, held in Ankara in 1941. The congress divided the country into regions by their geographical features, and that division has been used in geography lessons and on maps ever since.

The names of the regions

Four regions take their name from the sea on their coast: Marmara, Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Sea. Three are named after their position in Anatolia: Central Anatolia, Eastern Anatolia and Southeastern Anatolia. Even when a region is named after a sea, not all its provinces are on the coast; the Black Sea and Aegean regions also include provinces with no coastline.

Regions and provinces

The regions are not administrative units; the administrative unit of Türkiye is the province, and there are 81. Region borders follow geographical features while province borders follow administration, so the two do not always match and the land of some provinces stretches into two regions. In the common textbook list, each province is still assigned to a single region.

By that list the Black Sea Region has the most provinces (18), followed by Eastern Anatolia (14) and Central Anatolia (13); Marmara has 11, Southeastern Anatolia 9, and the Aegean and Mediterranean 8 each. By area the largest region is Eastern Anatolia and the smallest is Southeastern Anatolia.

In the game

The game uses the common textbook list of provinces and regions: each province belongs to one region, and that region is the right answer. The map is drawn from Natural Earth data, which is in the public domain, and the province borders are the real ones. The region colours only belong to the game's report card and are not an official colour scheme.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Regions quiz separate from the Türkiye Map Quiz game?

No. Regions is a mode of the Türkiye Map Quiz game, and this page opens the game directly in that mode. Your card album and records are saved together with the main game.

What is the difference between the full round and the quick round?

The full round asks all 81 provinces and its score goes to the leaderboard. The quick round asks 20 random provinces; it is meant for a short review and is kept only as your best on this device.

What happens if I choose the wrong region?

The button turns red, a note says the province is not in that region, and you choose again for the same province. After three misses the correct region is shown and the province goes on the list at the end of the round.

If a province lies in two regions, which one does the game accept?

The game uses the common textbook list, where every province is assigned to one region; that region is the right answer.

Why is the map coloured at the end of the round?

After each answer the province is painted in its region colour. When a full round ends all 81 provinces are painted and the map becomes a report card showing the 7 regions, with the province names shown as well.

Are there hints in Regions mode?

No. Scored modes have no hints, to keep the leaderboard fair. Hints are only in the untimed Learn mode.

Can I play with a keyboard?

Yes. Keys 1-7 choose the regions in button order: 1 Marmara, 2 Aegean, 3 Mediterranean, 4 Central Anatolia, 5 Black Sea, 6 Eastern Anatolia, 7 Southeastern Anatolia.

Do cards open in Regions mode?

Yes. The first time you answer a province correctly, its culture card opens in your album; new cards are listed at the end of the round.
