Neighbouring Provinces Quiz

Find every neighbour of the highlighted province on the map.

How to play

A province is highlighted on the map and a counter appears at the top, such as "Find the neighbours: Sivas 0/8". Tap every province that shares a land border with it; each neighbour you find lights up in turquoise and the counter goes up. The sea does not count. Tapping a province that is not a neighbour is a mistake; after 3 mistakes on one province the remaining neighbours are shown and the game moves on. A round has 15 provinces, and you can choose to play only the provinces of one region. For every question the map zooms to the province and its neighbours, and a magnifier opens where small provinces are crowded together.

1Go around itStart at one end of the border and follow it clockwise, tapping each neighbour in turn.
2Watch the counterThe counter tells you how many neighbours are left; if one is missing, look at the short stretches of border.
3Ignore the seaA province across the water is not a neighbour; only land borders count.

How to play the Neighbouring Provinces Quiz: a guide to finding neighbours on the map

The Neighbouring Provinces Quiz asks you to find every province that shares a land border with the highlighted one. A round has 15 provinces; for each one you tap its neighbours one by one, and a counter shows how many are left. Neighbours is a mode of the Türkiye Map Quiz game: your card album and records are shared with the main game.

This guide covers choosing a round, answering, mistakes, scoring, the magnifier for small provinces and quick ways to find neighbours.

The goal

For each question a province pulses in gold, and at the top "Find the neighbours:" appears with the province name and a counter (for example 0/9). The goal is to tap every province that shares a land border with it. The sea does not count, and provinces whose borders touch at a single point are not neighbours either. Each neighbour you find turns turquoise, and when the counter is full the next province comes up.

Choosing a round

Start: 15 provinces asks 15 random provinces from all over Türkiye, and its score goes to the leaderboard. Below, under Or choose a region, you can practise only the provinces of one region; the questions then come from that region, although the neighbours may be in other regions. Region rounds do not go to the leaderboard; your best is kept on your device.

The provinces asked always have at least 3 neighbours. Kilis, Yalova, Hakkari and Iğdır, which have fewer, never come up as questions, but you still need to find them as neighbours of other provinces.

Tapping and mistakes

Tap a province you think is a neighbour. If you are right, it turns turquoise, the counter goes up and its name is shown below. If you tap a province that is not a neighbour, it flashes red, a note such as "Nevşehir is not a neighbour" appears, and it counts as a mistake. Tapping a neighbour you have already found changes nothing, and tapping the highlighted province itself is not a mistake either; you only get a "That is the province itself" reminder.

After 3 mistakes on one province, the remaining neighbours are shown in gold, the province goes on the list at the end of the round and the next one comes up.

Score and leaderboard

  • Each neighbour you find: 20 points
  • All neighbours of a province found without a single mistake: 40 extra points
  • 3 mistakes: the remaining neighbours are shown, with no points for them

In this mode time does not affect the score, so you can take your time and follow the border carefully. At the end you see your score with accuracy (the share of provinces you finished without a mistake), time and total mistakes. The score of the all-Türkiye round goes to the Neighbours leaderboard.

Small provinces and the magnifier

For each question the map zooms to the highlighted province and all its neighbours, so the provinces you are looking for are on screen. On a phone some provinces are very small; if there is more than one province under your finger, the answer is not taken straight away: a magnifier opens next to your finger and you choose the right province inside it. You can zoom with two fingers or the mouse wheel and drag to move; the corner buttons and the +, - and 0 keys do the same. Turning your phone sideways makes the map bigger.

End of the round

After 15 provinces the results screen shows your score, accuracy, time, mistakes, the Ones you missed list and the New cards you opened this round. The first time you find a province as a neighbour, its culture card opens in your album. View the map takes you back to the map; now that the round is over, province names can be shown on it: hover with the mouse on a computer, or press and hold on a phone.

Tips

  • Start at one end of the border and follow it clockwise, tapping each neighbour in turn.
  • If the counter is not full, look at the short stretches of border and the corners; a small province may be hiding there.
  • Ignore the sea: İstanbul and Yalova face each other across the water but are not neighbours.
  • Neighbours can be in different regions; provinces on a region border are the ones most often missed.
  • Big provinces have many neighbours: Konya, Erzurum and Erzincan have the busiest borders, with 9 each.
  • Practise the provinces of your own region first, then move on to the all-Türkiye round.
  • After the round, find the provinces from the Ones you missed list on the map and look at their neighbours.

The provinces of Türkiye and their neighbours

How to learn neighbouring provinces

Two provinces are neighbours if they share a land border; the sea does not count. That is why İstanbul and Yalova are not neighbours, even though they face each other across the water. Of the 81 provinces of Türkiye, Konya, Erzurum and Erzincan have the most neighbours, 9 each, and Kilis is the only province with a single neighbour (Gaziantep). The easiest way to learn neighbours is to go once around the province on the map: for every question the game fits the province and its neighbours on screen, colours the neighbours you find and lists the ones you missed at the end of the round.

81 provinces

The administrative unit of Türkiye is the province, and there are 81. The largest province by area is Konya and the smallest is Yalova. Province borders meet on land; if two provinces share a land border, they are neighbours.

The sea and neighbours

The sea does not count. İstanbul and Yalova lie on opposite shores of the Sea of Marmara, but they have no land border, so they are not neighbours; Yalova has only two neighbours, Bursa and Kocaeli. Provinces that stretch across both sides of a strait can, however, border provinces on both sides: İstanbul borders Kocaeli on the Anatolian side and Tekirdağ and Kırklareli in Thrace, and Çanakkale borders Balıkesir in Anatolia and Edirne and Tekirdağ in Thrace.

Most and fewest neighbours

The provinces with the most neighbours are Konya, Erzurum and Erzincan, with 9 each. They are followed by Bolu, Diyarbakır, Sivas and Yozgat with 8 each; the capital, Ankara, has 7. The only province with a single neighbour is Kilis, whose one neighbour is Gaziantep. Hakkari, Iğdır and Yalova have two neighbours each.

In the game

The map in the game is drawn from Natural Earth data, which is in the public domain. Neighbours were worked out from the province borders on this map: two provinces count as neighbours if they share a land border, however short, while touching at a single point does not count. The result was checked against lists from other sources; the 9 neighbours of Konya, Erzurum and Erzincan and the single neighbour of Kilis were confirmed in that check.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Neighbours quiz separate from the Türkiye Map Quiz game?

No. Neighbours is a mode of the Türkiye Map Quiz game, and this page opens the game directly in that mode. Your card album and records are saved together with the main game.

Which provinces are asked?

Each round asks 15 provinces that have at least 3 neighbours. Kilis, Yalova, Hakkari and Iğdır never come up as questions, but you still need to find them as neighbours of other provinces.

What happens if I tap a province that is not a neighbour?

It flashes red and counts as a mistake. After 3 mistakes on one province, the remaining neighbours are shown in gold and the next province comes up.

Is tapping the highlighted province itself a mistake?

No. You only get a "That is the province itself" reminder; your mistakes do not go up.

Do neighbours across the sea count?

No. Only a shared land border counts. That is why İstanbul and Yalova are not neighbours, even though they face each other across the water.

How do I tap small provinces on a phone?

For each question the map zooms to the province and its neighbours. If several small provinces are under your finger, a magnifier opens and you choose the right one inside it. Turning the phone sideways makes the map bigger.

What changes if I choose a region?

Only that region's provinces are asked, though their neighbours can still be in other regions. Region rounds do not go to the leaderboard; your best is kept on your device.

Does time affect the score?

No. In Neighbours mode points come only from the neighbours you find (20 each) and from provinces finished without mistakes (40 extra). Time is only shown on the results screen.

Is Neighbouring Provinces Quiz free?

Yes. No download or account needed; it plays right in your browser. Watching an ad for a hint is always your choice.

Will I lose my progress?

Your progress is saved automatically on this device. Sign in and it moves to your account, so you can continue on any device.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. The game opens full screen on phones; tap the X in the corner to exit. On iPhone use "Add to Home Screen" to play it like an app.

Can I play Neighbouring Provinces Quiz offline?

Yes. A game you have opened once is stored on your phone or computer and opens without internet. Leaderboards and cloud saves need a connection.

Which languages are available?

Turkish, English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French and Russian.
