Hangman

Guess the letters and keep your kite in the sky.

Word Games #Brain Teaser#Five-Minute Break Mobile friendly 7 languages

How to play

The boxes show how many letters the secret word has, and the category tells you its topic. Pick a letter on the on-screen keyboard: if it is in the word, it appears everywhere it occurs. If not, one of the 6 bows on the kite's tail flies off in the wind; once the bows are gone, one more mistake snaps the string and the kite drifts away. You have 7 tries in all, and you win when every letter is revealed. Guess word after word in Streak, solve the same word as everyone in Word of the Day, or challenge a friend in Two Players.

1Start with vowelsA is in 57 percent of the words in this game, E in 51 percent; R, O and I follow.
2Use the categoryThink about the number of boxes and the topic together and the options shrink fast.
3Save your triesLeave rare letters for last; every try you keep adds 20 points to the word.

How to play Hangman: a complete guide

Hangman on CetinsGame is the letter guessing game you probably first played on the back of a school notebook. The boxes tell you how many letters the secret word has, the category tells you its topic, and you uncover it one letter at a time. In our version nobody is hanged: instead there is a kite with six colourful bows on its tail, and every wrong guess lets the wind carry one bow away.

Below you will find the controls, the three modes, how points are worked out, the Reveal hint, the kite designs and a few tactics based on letter frequency.

Goal

Uncover every letter of the secret word before the kite gets away. You have 7 tries in total: the 6 bows fly off one by one, and once they are all gone, one more mistake snaps the string and the kite drifts off into the distance. The word is then shown in red and the round is over.

You cannot type the whole word as a guess; everything goes letter by letter. In words with a space, the space is shown from the start.

Controls on phone and desktop

  • On-screen keyboard: tap a letter. If it is in the word, it appears everywhere it occurs and the key turns turquoise. If not, the key turns grey and a bow flies away.
  • You cannot pick the same letter twice.
  • On a computer you can also type on your physical keyboard; when a round ends, Enter takes you to the next word.
  • The English keyboard has the 26 letters A to Z.
  • Word language: in the How to play window you can choose the language of the words separately from the menu language. The English list has 749 words.

Three modes: Streak, Word of the Day, Two Players

Streak: choose a category (one of 12, or Mixed) and a difficulty: Easy, Normal or Hard. Words come one after another, each word you guess adds one to your streak, and the streak ends when a word gets away. You can change category or difficulty mid-streak; if you have already picked a letter in the current word, the change applies from the next word. A streak you leave halfway is saved.

Word of the Day: a new word arrives every day at midnight Turkish time, and everyone playing in that language guesses the same word. You play it once a day, with no hint and no second chance. Afterwards you see How did everyone do? (No mistakes, 1-2 mistakes, 3+ mistakes, Got away), your daily streak and a countdown to the next word.

Two Players: one player writes a secret word (3-20 letters, up to 3 words) and can pick a category that is shown as a hint. With Play on this device you hand the phone over and the guessing starts at I'm ready. If the guesser finds the word they score 1 point, otherwise the writer does; roles swap every round and the score can be reset. With Send as a link the word is encrypted inside the link. Your friend guesses on their own device and can answer with Send a word back.

How points work

Each word scores 10 × number of different letters + 20 × tries left. In Streak a difficulty multiplier is added: Easy ×1, Normal ×1.5, Hard ×2. Hard words are longer and less common.

ExampleCalculationPoints
A word with 6 different letters (like PUMPKIN), 5 tries left, Normal(60 + 100) × 1.5240
Same word, solved with Reveal240 ÷ 2120

When a streak ends, its total goes to the weekly and all-time rankings. Word of the Day points have no multiplier and go to a separate daily table.

Reveal and the second chance

Reveal works only in Streak, once per word: it uncovers the hidden letter that appears most often in the word and does not count as a mistake. Three a day are free; after that it is optional with a short ad. If only one different letter is left, it will not open it.

Second chance: if your streak is at least 3 words, a window appears on your final mistake before the kite flies away. If you want, you watch a short ad, two bows come back and you get 2 more tries. Once per streak. Ads are always your choice; the game is never interrupted by them.

My Kites and statistics

There are 13 kite designs: Classic plus one for each category, such as a tile flower for Cities or a tulip for Turkish cuisine. Guess 10 words in a category (in Streak or Word of the Day) to unlock its design; the one you pick in My Kites is worn by the kite in the game.

Statistics track words guessed, your longest streak, best streak score, flawless words (no mistakes and no hint), your daily streak and unlocked designs.

Tips

  • In this game's English word list, A appears in 57% of the words and E in 51%. Starting with A, then E, is almost always a good opening.
  • R comes next at 45%, followed by O and I at 39% each: try these before most other consonants.
  • N, L and T each appear in roughly a third of the words in this game, which makes them the strongest consonants after R.
  • Read the category every time. Countries, Sports or Instruments narrow the possibilities more than you might think.
  • Save Reveal for later in the word. It opens the most frequent hidden letter, but the word then scores half, so use it when you are truly stuck.
  • In Word of the Day there are no hints: open with common vowels and leave rare letters for the end.

Hangman: a word game from paper to screen

What is hangman?

Hangman is a classic pencil and paper word game in which one player thinks of a word and the other guesses it letter by letter; it is a favourite in schools and on long journeys. Its origin is not known for certain. A similar letter guessing game appears as "Birds, Beasts and Fishes" in Alice Bertha Gomme's book of traditional British children's games, published in 1894. Today some teachers and families swap the classic drawing for gentle pictures such as a flower or a sun. We chose a kite: with each mistake a bow flies off its tail, so the game stays fun for everyone.

Origins

Nobody knows exactly where or when hangman began. Written sources show that it was known in England by the late 19th century: Alice Bertha Gomme's The Traditional Games of England, Scotland, and Ireland, published in 1894, describes a similar letter guessing game under the name Birds, Beasts and Fishes. How it reached its present form is not documented in detail.

At school and on the road

Its strength is simplicity: one sheet of paper, one pencil and two people. One thinks of a word and draws a dash for each letter, the other calls out letters. That is why it has been passed on in school breaks, between lessons and on long journeys, and is known in many parts of the world. In Turkey it is called adam asmaca, in Spanish Ahorcado and in Portuguese Jogo da Forca.

Why a kite instead of a man?

In the classic game each wrong letter adds a stroke to a drawing. Some teachers and parents today replace that drawing with gentler pictures such as a flower, a sun or a kite, and the game is just as much fun. CetinsGame chose the same path: the screen shows only a kite with bows on its tail, so the game is comfortable to play with young children, in class or around the family table.

The short story fits this idea: on a windy spring day a grandfather and his grandchild climb a hill to fly a kite. The grandfather ties six bows to the tail and says that every bow is one try.

The kite, a toy of the wind

A kite is a light frame on a string that rises on the wind, and it is known as a children's toy all over the world. The tail helps it fly steadily, so watching the wind take a bow with each wrong letter feels natural. The kite designs use motifs from Turkish tradition, such as the tile flower, the tulip, the pomegranate, the evil eye bead and the kilim diamond.

Word games and vocabulary

Word games like hangman give players a chance to meet new words and pay attention to how they are spelled. That is why they are often played in classrooms too, as a light exercise that may help with vocabulary and spelling. Categories such as School, Jobs or Instruments suit that purpose, and Two Players lets a teacher or parent write their own words.

How Hangman was made

Hangman is the word game everyone knows from school desks and long trips, played with paper and pencil. While making it we wanted to change one thing from the start: the classic drawing. A word game that ends with a person being hanged is not a nice ending for children, and some teachers and families already draw a flower or a sun on paper instead. The game keeps the name people search for, but nobody is hanged on screen.

We chose a kite instead. Several ideas were tried: a tulip losing its petals, a kilim pattern coming undone, an emptying hourglass. The kite worked best. The six colourful bows on its tail are your tries; each wrong letter sends one away on the wind, and after the sixth one, one more mistake snaps the string and the kite drifts off into the sky. Even losing feels light, and when you win the kite climbs higher with stars around it. The short story of a child flying a kite with their grandfather on a windy hill grew out of this.

The words were chosen separately for each language; the Turkish list was not translated. English has 749 words, and the other languages have their own cities, dishes and everyday words, while the Turkish cuisine category appears in all seven. Weapons, combat sports, alcohol and words carrying people's names were left out so the game stays family friendly. The keyboard changes with the language too: Spanish has its own Ñ key, German has Ä, Ö and Ü, and Turkish keeps İ and I as separate letters.

On paper, hangman is played by two people, so the Two Players mode mattered to us. One writes the word and the phone goes to the other. You can also send your word to a friend far away as a link, and the word cannot be read in the link. The Word of the Day, the same word for everyone each day, and the kite designs that unlock after ten words in a category give you small reasons to come back every day.

Before release we checked that every word can be found within seven tries and that the game works in seven languages and on six screen sizes. The music in the Uşşak mode was generated in code, and every picture was drawn in code. The game was released as version 1.0 on 14 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no hanged man in this Hangman?

Instead of a hanged figure the screen shows a kite with six bows on its tail. Each wrong letter sends one bow flying, and after all six are gone one more mistake snaps the string. The game is the same, just friendlier for children, families and teachers.

How many wrong guesses do I get?

You have 7 tries in total: 6 bows and finally the string. On the seventh mistake the kite flies away and the word is shown in red. In Streak, with a streak of at least 3 words, you can optionally watch an ad to get 2 tries back.

Can I guess the whole word at once?

No, in this game you guess letter by letter. If you think you know the word, pick its missing letters in turn; each correct letter fills every place where it occurs.

When does the Word of the Day change?

Every day at midnight Turkish time. Everyone playing in that language gets the same word, and you can play it once a day. The countdown on the result screen shows how long until the next one.

If I send a friend a word, can they see it in the link?

No. With Send as a link the word is encrypted inside the link, so it cannot be read from the address. Your friend guesses it on their own device, using the keyboard of the word's language.

Which letter does Reveal open?

The hidden letter that appears most often in the word, and it does not count as a mistake. It works only in Streak, once per word, with three free uses a day. The word then scores half, and Reveal does nothing when only one different letter is left.

How do I unlock new kite designs?

Guess a total of 10 words in one category, in Streak or Word of the Day, and that category's design unlocks. Including Classic there are 13 designs; choose one in My Kites and the game's kite wears it.

Are the English words a translation of the Turkish list?

No. Each language has its own word list chosen for that language. The English list has 749 words in 12 categories, including Turkish cuisine, alongside everyday topics such as Animals and Things at home.

Can I practise words in another language?

Yes. In the How to play window you can set the word language separately from the menu language, so the menus stay in English while you guess, for example, Spanish or Turkish words.

Is Hangman free?

Yes. No download or account needed; it plays right in your browser. Watching an ad for a hint is always your choice.

Will I lose my progress?

Your progress is saved automatically on this device. Sign in and it moves to your account, so you can continue on any device.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. The game opens full screen on phones; tap the X in the corner to exit. On iPhone use "Add to Home Screen" to play it like an app.

Can I play Hangman offline?

Yes. A game you have opened once is stored on your phone or computer and opens without internet. Leaderboards and cloud saves need a connection.

Which languages are available?

Turkish, English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French and Russian.
